Sunday Ceilidh – Featured Artist

By Karyn Mac
“The Real Ceilidh” Presenter. Irvine Beat FM

Karyn Mac here, from The Real Ceilidh on Sunday afternoons, from 4 – 6pm.

As you may have heard, I will be introducing a few new features on the Ceilidh from Sunday 3rd March 2019 – amongst these will be a featured album or artist.

Each week, right here on the website, I hope to bring you some details of the upcoming feature, some information about the album/band/artist, which I hope you will find interesting!

Gordon Pattullo’s Ceilidh Band

The first featured album will be from Gordon Pattullo’s Ceilidh Band – the album is called “Ceilidh Dance Party”.

It was released in 1998 by Grasmere Music Ltd.

The band lineup is:

Accordion 1                  Gordon Pattullo

Accordion 2                  Jim Johnstone

Piano                            John Crawford

Bass                             John Sinton

Drums                          Billy Thom

Guitar/Banjo/Mandolin   Billy Young

Flute/Piccolo                 George McIlwham

On the sleeve notes of the album, there is a note from Gordon about it:

Gordon Pattullo’s Ceilidh Band – Ceilidh Dance Party

“It has long been an ambition of mine to record an album of music suitable for dancing.  Yes, this is a first for me, as I have up until now concentrated on music for listening. Having had many requests for recording an album like this and the popularity of Ceilidh Dances, which is now world-wide, I have chosen 17 of the most popular dances and over 50 of my all-time favourite tunes. The backbone of any good Ceilidh Dance is of course the band and I’m delighted to have the team with me once again, with the addition of George McIlwham to capture the Ceilidh mood. So if you are a dancer or maybe just prefer to sit back with your feet up and listen to the band, we hope you will enjoy this Ceilidh Dance Party”.   Gordon Pattullo

One of Scotland’s Finest Accordionists

Gordon Pattullo

Gordon Pattullo – One of Scotland’s Finest Accordionists

Gordon Pattullo is one of the finest accordionists in Scotland.

Always in demand for a wide variety of functions, he is equally at home playing solo gigs at Accordion and Fiddle Clubs all over the country, on stage in a theatre, or playing at a dance surrounded by the top class musicians who join him in his Ceilidh Band.
His mum Georgina played piano and violin and his dad James, known to his many friends as Peem, played the melodeon. Gordon started accordion lessons at the age of eleven with Jim Marshall at the Dundee Accordion School of Music. Later, he also had lessons from ex World Champion Louis Cabrelli and from John Huband.

He entered his first competition aged just thirteen (the Junior Scottish Traditional section at Perth) and he won it – competing against over sixty other competitors!

Success In Scotland & Internationally

In 1977 Gordon was introduced to the legendary Scottish Entertainer, Andy Stewart. He became Andy’s Musical Director for many years and toured Canada and the USA with him. Gordon recorded his first album (LP) in 1976 called “A Gordon For You” and has since recorded well over 20 albums, 2 DVD’s and has numerous TV/Radio broadcasts under his belt.  These include his first radio broadcast in the 1970s, and appearances on The Jim McLeod Show, Andy’s Party and Northern Nights (all for Grampian), Thingummyjig (STV) and several Hogmanay shows for all three Scottish Stations.

Aside from Andy Stewart, Gordon has worked with many other famous names, including Kenneth McKellar, Moira Anderson, Dana, Lulu and George Hamilton IV.

He is also a prolific composer of music, having many of his tunes published as well as recorded by other bands/musicians.

In June 2008, Gordon was made a Guest of Honour of the NAAFC (National Association of Accordion and Fiddle Clubs) at their Celebrity Luncheon in Perth – a list of names that goes back to it’s very first recipient – Sir Jimmy Shand!

I think it is safe to say that the inaugural “Featured Album” on the Real Sunday Ceilidh should be a cracker!

“Things you probably didn’t know” about Gordon Pattullo:

  • His biggest musical influence was the late, great Will Starr
  • He occasionally dons some waders and indulges in loch fishing
  • He managed to find time in his busy schedule to be a lecturer in Traditional music at Perth College for 4 years
  • He wrote the tune “Victoria’s Waltz” for his accordion – which is the brand of accordion he plays regularly
  • As well as teaching and playing commitments, Gordon keeps busy repairing, tuning and restoring all types of accordions and melodions, and his client list includes some very well-known names.
  • It is not only musical instruments he likes to repair – he has a collection of old vintage tractors!
